Building the Herd

I often have experiences that make me reminiscent about my childhood; family traditions, sports teams, elementary school lunches, fabrics, etc. It is not those things specifically, but the people and feelings associated with them that have stuck with me with me as I’ve grown. I became aware of inclusion and exclusive feelings at a rather young age. Throughout the past couple years, I’ve realized the one thing I always yearn for is community. When I came to North Dakota State University, I expected a greatness: a nearly perfect life. Well, you’ve probably already pointed out my naivety. Freshman year was a rollercoaster of events, emotions, and thoughts. But I’ve grown… a lot, and for that, I’m thankful.

But the thing I’m most grateful for is applying myself. I joined Club Soccer, Emerging Leaders, Entrepreneur Club, Welcome Week, and tried College Republicans, as well as, Collegians for Life. While a couple were not my cup of tea, at least I know I tried. I know myself a little bit better with every experience I go through.

I’ve met so many people and I kid you not, everyday I leave for class, I see at least three people I know. I say hello and make conversation when I can. Otherwise, a squint of the eyes (because you know, the masks), and a wave is also satisfactory to let someone know you see them. When I say “see them” I mean it in more ways than one. Now, I invite conversation (instead of avoiding it) because it’s those little conversations that can make someone’s day. Additionally, they feel seen, appreciated, and important. And at the end of the day, that’s what everyone wants.

Just know you’re not alone. Cause I’m gonna make this place your home.

-Phillip Phillips.

My leap is to build community on and off campus. Over the next ten weeks, my goal is to initiate conversation and build more connections. I will measure this by keeping track of how many people I recognize everyday (which I’ve already started doing). I will also initiate conversation with at least one person I recognize. Additionally, my goal is to never feel alone. My next step will be to initiate a conversation with at least one new person every day.

Ever since I was little, I felt a sense of community whenever going to St. John’s University football games with my dad (an alumni). I’d see people run into people they knew while walking back to their friends. They’d smile, talk for a bit, and invite each other to events. I couldn’t wait to experience that for myself: the college community. What a life!

Now, I’m proud to call myself a bison, throw up my horns, and wear my green n yellow. I’m proud of all the wonderful people I’ve met and excited to meet more. I’m proud to call NDSU home. But most of all, I’m proud to have a whole herd behind me. Go Bison!
